We are having some difficulty in quantifying the performance of the TouchPad, because, well, be quick with its 1.2 GHz processor with 1 GB Snapdragon matched RAM, but too often left us waiting. Starting, for example, is 1:15, which is an eon compared to 30 seconds or so in both the Galaxy and the iPhone tab 2. Similarly, we find our newly started TouchPad through the SunSpider JavaScript benchmark and scored a score of 3988 ms. Which again compares unfavorably with a 2213 ms of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and 2173 ms virtually identical in the IPAD 2.
But the numbers are not everything, unless you are a mathematician or an accountant or an astrologer. So how TouchPad rate in real life? Navigation is pretty fast most of the time, but we found some pages that just seemed to have a particularly long time to load. Our site, with loads of graphics and Flash quickly. The site of Gmail, however, takes years and years ... and ages. Online video plays in the browser, but it rarely.
Most applications load quickly and sufficiently sensitive, but some, such as Weatherbug, are very slow. It is very easy to blame the developers get to grips with new hardware at this time, but in the end we never felt captivated by the spectacle. Of course, switching between tasks quickly and agile, but changing from horizontal to vertical is slow and sometimes after a day or two, we had to give a reboot to regain its optimum performance.
We are told that an update OTA is developing to help resolve some performance issues, specifically with Web browsing and targeting settings. However, we are not sure exactly when this update will be hitting the airwaves.
Battery according to HP is 9 hours of continuous video playback, and in our test (Wi-Fi Bluetooth, a video loop) that was about that: just over eight hours. That puts it slightly ahead of Motorola Xoom, but back behind the tab and the iPhone 2. Ultimately, this means that the tablet will comfortably a day of serious use, or several days of more casual tapping.
